Something new in political discourse, Stick to the Subject will bring together independent thinkers to debate public policy subjects in Conversation Sit-downs: cordial, round-table exchanges of points-of-view to be held at restaurants, cafes, taverns, and other convivial public locations.
When a small group of open-minded people speak directly to each other in a comfortable setting, the social graces kick in, and good talk can be had - even among those who disagree with one another. Unexpected points of agreement and compromise emerge when the give-and-take is respectful and stays focused on the subject at hand and when the goal is as much mutual understanding as changing minds.
When these small groups are networked and the results of all their deliberations are compiled, the small group advantage of quality communications and deal making also achieves the advantage of scale. The reasoned judgement of six people around a table becomes the reasoned judgement of six times the number of tables.
Stick to the Subject begins as an academic garage project. The tech team working on it are retired developers of online learning platforms. We will put up bare bones versions of the Discussion Society and Knowledge Base systems along with a description of how we think they could be used and then turn to our friends in higher education for collaboration on the final design.
